In 2016, a video surveillance system was installed in Windhoek, Namibia's capital city. The network is based on an upgrade to the Wifi system. It is monitored by the Namibian Police Force and oversees major intersections and 'crime hotspots'. Radwin is a wireless solutions company who do not actually provide facial recognition, but emphasise that their solutions can have it plugged in due to the enhanced connectivity and the capabilities of the cameras. The 'advantages' of this Radwin solution are listed as including facial identification and license plate recognition for criminal investigations. While it is unclear whether facial recognition or other forms of computer vision are in use, the network forms part of smart city development plans for Windhoek, and the police have since become one of the first southern African police forces to use automated facial as well as fingerprint recognition.  +
