Lockport High School in New York implemented a facial recognition system, sparking debate over safety versus privacy and bias concerns. The facial recognition system in Lockport schools scans faces captured by cameras to check if they match a "persons of interest" list created by school administrators. This list includes sex offenders, people with restraining orders against seeing students, former employees barred from visiting, and others deemed threats. If a match is detected, the system alerts security personnel to confirm the match and decide on action. It also has the capability to scan for guns, further alerting both administrators and police if a weapon is detected. +
Truett McConnell University (TMU), located in Cleveland, Georgia, announced a partnership with ACG Solutions on January 7, 2019, to implement a technology-driven initiative aimed at enhancing campus safety and security. The initiative includes the adoption of the Synchronized Orchestrated Response (SOR™) solution, which is expected to improve the university's emergency preparedness and response capabilities. Key components of the initiative are the integration of scalable surveillance cameras, access control platforms, real-time active shooter detection technology, situational awareness graphics, and a virtual command center. This effort aims to automate emergency response protocols and equip first responders with advanced tools for better situational awareness and quicker response to potential threats. +

Across the Eastern cape, Atlas Security has deployed a network of CCTV cameras. Atlas Security is a private security company with its own 'force', but it has used the control and command centre to collaborate with police, for example by sharing footage with them. The networked CCTV allows for the monitoring of a wide variety of settings in one centre. License Plate Recognition is in use however it is not clear whether biometrics are. However, 'video analytics' are also used by the system to detect suspicious activity. It can be speculated that forensic facial recognition, person detection or people tracking may be in use. +
In 2019, Broward County Schools installed Avigilon cameras, including the Appearance Search tool, amidst debate on whether it employs facial recognition. With around 270,000 students, Broward County is one of the largest US public school districts. Post the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in 2018, the district plans to implement an experimental AI surveillance system. The system aims to alert monitors of unusual events or unauthorized individuals. Shannon Flounnory, the district’s safety director, notes Appearance Search's varied uses, from finding lost children to monitoring staff conduct. However, the tool's classification remains unclear, as it shares traits with facial recognition despite operating differently. +
