Description[ ]

Lagos has smart city efforts, including the installation of 10,000 cameras. They are connected to a real time crime center, implying that forensic facial recognition is probably in use. Here, Mr. Hakeem Fahm, Commissioner, Ministry of Science and Technology for Lagos details the deployment. Fingerprinting is used by the state to register residents.

Fahm, explained that the first phase of the smart city project aims to address security, transportation and infrastructure programs like deployment of HD cameras with gantries, integration of the deployed HD cameras with the centralized emergency command and control centre (CCC), provision of road signage structure across Lagos state and provision of street lights all over the state. The second phase of the project will see the deployment of 10,000 HD cameras, deployment of world class e-Government solution and world class Data center solution for the state, deployment of one key Alarm, provision of metro fibre network to serve as backbone for communication, Unified Communications with Smart phones for First Respondent Agencies such as police, fire service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and eLTE solutions. According to him, “The security component will deploy thousands of surveillance CCTV cameras through the length and breadth of the State." 1

LASSRA has also improved technical excellence with the introduction of 4.4.2 fingerprint capturing process and development of an effective online platform to aid enrolment process. A real time online registration has been developed and is currently being utilised to reduce the time and effort spent in registration for residency cards 2
