Summary Since 2015, NEC has been rolling out smart transportation systems in Malaysia. The systems use sensor based tools and CCTV, which can serve as platforms for facial recognition software or other biometrics. In 2020, NEC Malaysia invited patrons to view biometric solutions which they had deployed in Malaysia in their offices in Malaysia. For this reason it can be speculated that some form of biometrics are in use in the extensive smart transportation systems deployed by NEC. The systems on trains in particular have been marketed as providing security against 'terror attacks'.

Description[ ]

Since 2015, NEC has been rolling out smart transportation technologies in Malaysia. The usages include CCTV monitoring of highways. It is unclear whether biometrics are in use, but in 2020 NEC invited patrons to view examples of the use of biometrics in Malaysia and elsewhere in their offices in Malaysia 1

For highway users, NEC transportation control system distributes information on road conditions, including vehicle passenger information from road traffic measurement sensors; weather information from weather sensors; videos from closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance cameras; as well as emergency telephone and cellphone calls from highway users 2

Chuah Yeow Chiang, division manager of NEC Malaysia’s public safety and social infrastructure division, is quoted in outlining these details.

For railways, Chuah said NEC’s focus is on communications and security. “There are wired and wireless solutions for train-to-train and train-to-station communications. “As for the security part, images captured via CCTV cameras at stations and in the trains will be sent back to the data centre for analysis. “To combat the rise in terror attacks on public transport networks, the NEC system also manages on-train security, which allows authorities to improve security and communication on mass-transit systems,” he said 2

The following quote illustrates the development of these solutions as part of wider smart city plans for Malaysia based not only on traffic management but overall sensing and data based solutions.

NEC aims to work hand in hand with the local authorities, property developers, township developers, retailers, and transportation providers in Malaysia to deliver and realize the smart cities concept. A key solution for local governments would be NEC’s Smart Transportation solutions, which have been deployed in selected states in Malaysia and other countries such as Singapore, Hong Kong and India. Smart City technologies can be the key driver to reinvent Malaysian cities to cope with growing populations who have increasing needs, including consistent connectivity. “As a leading Smart City solutions provider, NEC aims to focus on 4 cores of Sensing, Authentication, Monitoring and Control, which orchestrate a city’s smart platform,” added Mr. Chong 3
