Description[ ]
Since 2009, Gambia has had a biometric national ID based on fingerprints, for whom the first contractor was Innovatrics.
The national ID cards were developed and deployed in 2009, which should run for a minimum of 5 years. The identity document system prevents & minimizes the occurrence of duplicates while providing secure identification to all the citizens of the country. Following the launch of the new solution, it has been successful in detecting and preventing identity theft and fraud 3
To provide highly efficient fingerprint recognition technology, overall speed and accuracy are important. To meet this need, Innovatrics deployed a platform based on the Intel Xeon processor E5- 2600 v2 product family. “Intel is the leader in solutions that require high computing performance,” explained Petro. “We work with extreme amounts of data that need to be analyzed in seconds. The Intel Xeon processor E5-2600 v2 product family helps us enhance the performance of our technology and algorithms. Our solution based on this platform has revolutionized the national ID systems in the UAE and Gambia, made way for biometric passports in Ghana and Liberia, as well as played a key role in securing the credibility of voters’ identification during the 2012 elections in Burkina Faso, Namibia, Nigeria and Mozambique to name a few. We also continue to enable worldwide deployments that require high-speed fingerprint matching, such as border control solutions, license issuance and population registration.” 2
In 2018, Gambia rolled out a new National ID, this one provided by Semlex.
The Gambian National ID card will be rolled out to the public beginning October 1st, 2018. Adama Barrow, President of the Republic of Gambia, urged all eligible citizens to register with the Immigration Department to acquire the new biometric ID card.
Last week the President, Vice President and the First Ladies underwent the registration process for the national document at a demonstration ceremony supervised by the Director General of Immigration, the Semlex project director for Gambia and the Minister of Interior 1
