EISA 2023
A critical re-modelling of algorithmic anomaly detection.

At the International Studies Association Pan-European Conference 2023 (EISA PEC) in Potsdam, Ruben van de Ven participated in the Early Career Researchers Workshop Reshaping Perceptions: Human-Nonhuman Systems in Security Contexts which was organised by Sofie van der Maarel (Radboud University Nijmegen) and Klaudia Klonowska (Asser Institute). Natalie Welfens and Rebecca Mignot-Mahdavi were providing valuable contributions to the discussion as senior academic participant.

Ruben van de Ven presented his ongoing research on tracklets and the human signal in camera surveillance.

Other participants to the workshop:

• Jasper van der Kist (European University Viadrina)
• Lucas Perez Florentino (Geneva Graduate Institute)
• Italo Brandimarte (University of Cambridge)
• Taylor Woodcock (Asser Institute)
• Anna Nadibaidze (Center for War Studies)
• Justinas Lingevičius (Vilnius University)
• Anneroos Planqué-van Hardeveld (University of Amsterdam)
• Robin Vanderborght (University of Antwerp)

A second contribution to the conference was at a panel on "Analysing European Security Through the Concept and Practice of Tinkering", organised by Jasper van der Kist (European University Viadrina) and Rocco Bellonova, which included contributions from Vanessa Ugolini, Jonathan Austin, and Anna Leander. This panel investigated the tinkering as a both a site and method of research. Ruben presented how he works with the notion of critical re-modelling, developped by [Shintaro Miyazaki](https://amor.cms.hu-berlin.de/~miyazash/), to investigate computer vision technologies.
